Spiked and studded collars are usually leather or patent leather collars with metal spikes riveted to the material. Some of these collars have a backing to keep the flat bottom of the spikes off the dog's neck, but some have exposed metal underneath. Most modern spiked collars have snub nosed or rounded spikes to protect the dog (and his playmates) from scratching and punctures. Unless your dog protects a flock of sheep, there is no reason to purchase a spiked collar with sharp edges. Spikes on dog collars today are for aesthetic purposes only, to give a tough look to a tiny dog, or to accentuate the attitude of your oversized best friend. The spikes are heavy, however, so these collars may not be suitable for teacup dogs or toy dogs of some breeds. For spiked collar sizing information, see , above.

Small Dog Collars for Small, Toy Breeds and Puppies
Most electric dog fences on the market are not designed for dogs under 12 lbs. The collars are too big and bulky for a pint-sized pooch, making it impossible to get a proper fit and the correction levels are simply too strong for the toy breeds. PetSafe has made a point to develop dog fence systems appropriate for dogs 5 - 8 lbs. and have a range of products that are suitable for toy breeds. If you're looking for an electric dog fence we strongly recommend the PetSafe Elite Little Dog In-Ground Fence for dogs in the 5 - 10 lb range. The Elite Little Dog Fence has a tiny, lightweight collar and the correction levels are dialed down too. The problem with using a fence collar designed for larger dogs, even if it does fit your toy breed, is that you lose the range of correction levels because only the lowest one or two are appropriate for such a small dog. With the PetSafe Little Dog line you keep that range of correction levels because the whole range has been lowered to levels that make sense for smaller dogs. The Havahart Radial-Shape is also suitable for small dogs in terms of the correction levels, but the collar is larger and more bulky than the PetSafe Little Dog Collar.
