I have a 14 1/2 year old German shepherd who can only lay on one side (which has a pressure sore that has healed over the last year). We have a variety of beds (BRINDLE Soft Memory Foam Dog Bed with Removable Washable Cover for example). Just wanted to caution and against the raised hammock style beds in terms of pressure. For our guy it made things worse for distributing pressure (although it allowed for air flow.) Our love needs memory foam or orthopedic beds that I wash on regular rotation to prevent skin infections. On top of the washable covers I do place a human hospital sized bed pad or chucks – they hold the moisture but are soft to touch and designed to take a beating in the wash. So what if a memory foam dog bed is orthopedic. How does that help you keep a cleaner house, right? Well, I want you to think about what your dog does on an average day. Do you let her outside? Probably right? When she goes outside does she dig, track through mud, swim in water, and/or roll in smelly things? Probably, and if she does not, she would most likely like to. Dogs bring all that dirt and odor inside. Then, once they are inside, they track that dirt to wherever they choose to lie down. Maybe your dog likes to lie on your couch. Maybe she likes to lie on your clean carpet, a throw pillow, or worse, your bed? Everything that your dog has in her fur has the potential to end up in places that you would like to keep clean, like your bed. Now, if you have a dog bed, you can centralize where your dog tracks dirt, but only if your dog uses the bed. That is right, if your dog spends most of her time in the house on her bed, then most of the dirt she brings in from the outside will end up on that bed. There is a catch to that however. You can only centralize where your dog spends most of her time if she wants to spend most of her time there. What I am saying is that if you have a discount dog bed, there is no way your dog will willingly spend her days lying on that as opposed to your bed. If you get your dog a memory foam dog bed however, then your dog will want to spend most of her time in her bed because it is so comfortable, and will hence deposit most of the dirt she tracks in on her bed.

The first thing you want is a bed that's constructed more like a human memory foam mattress. That means it either has 4 inches of higher density foam (greater than 3lbs) or has 2"-3" solid memory foam constructed over a firmer foam core. With thinner layers or less dense foam you need a core inside to prevent the to squish down to the floor or platform. A quality Memory foam orthopedic dog bed may be expensive, but it will give your furry friend the same that people enjoy on a memory foam mattress.Instead, we selected products with the thickest mattresses we could find. A couple of our selections have mattresses made with slabs of quilted poly fiberfill. But most of the “orthopedic” beds are made with super-thick, high-quality foam – those products being best able to evenly distribute a dog’s weight and offer balanced, cushiony, firm support each time the dog gets on the bed.
