Is Grain Free Dog Food the Way to Go? – Canine Journal
However! Unless you adopt careful pet food storagehabits, even that premium dog food could be causing your pet more harmthan good.

I am reading conflicting information about when to transfer our puppy from puppy food to adult dog food. Our vet says anytime between 6 and 18 months for our type of dog (Basset hound). The dog food guide says 12 months, the 30-year pet store owner says 6 months, and our back-up vet says 12 months at the longest. My gut instinct says, because a Basset’s bone structure is not fully developed until about 18 months old, keep her on puppy food until she's 18 months, but she's not interested in her puppy food anymore and as of late goes several days at a time without eating. When she does eat it's only about a cup and a half. She's exuberant and playful and drinks plenty of water, so I am not sure what is left other than maybe she is ready for adult dog food?

We originally teamed up with a regionally known super premium dog food company of 75 years from Idaho that also produces premium treats. This was a great company decision for quality. However this also rose the biggest question of the product, is my pets tummie going to get upset. This is why we moved from our initial decision and to a new White Label food company that is not high in any 1 ingredient or featuring any traits, we simply do not want those foods. So in the end a high end neutral food is the best choice! While freeze drying can suspend spoilage for years, there is still a very small amount of moisture left in the dog food, so eventually it will go bad. However, most of us are not going to purchase a year's worth of dog food in advance, so spoilage really shouldn't become an issue. Freeze dried dog rations remain viable for years as long the packaging is not damaged or opened. This is because all micro-organisms need water to survive, so the spoilage process goes into suspended animation. When you're ready to feed your pet, all you have to do is open the package, add a little water to reconstitute the food and Fido's dinner is ready to be served. Got a pet that’s a picky eater? Has dandruff or a dull coat? Food allergies or sensitivities? Feeding your dog or cat the right premium-quality food can be the solution to many issues.
