Vegetarian guide dog is allergic to meat - Dogtime
Food allergies in dogs many time is associated with grain when in fact it is usually due to the protein source found in meat
If the dog is intolerant, does this mean they cannot eat ANY form of meat protein at all, or just the sources they've been exposed to. And if it's intolerance versus allergy would it happen over time? She was put on hydrolyzed food and the vomiting stopped, although she's starting to balk at her food again. I'm trying to prove to my Mom that she needs to try a novel source. That hydrolyzed may not be necessary.
In my clinical practice treating dogs, one of the most common ailments I diagnose and treat indogs is skin allergies. Recurrent skin allergies (itching, scratching, biting, licking, leading torecurrent inflammation and infection of the skin) are usually due to one of the following (andsometimes a combination of these factors): (1) flea allergy dermatitis (the most commonlydiagnosed); (2) food allergy (occurs in about 10-20% of cases); and (3) atopy, which is an allergyto something in the environment, such as house dust mites, pollen, grass, etc. Atopy is relativelyuncommon. Most of the time a dog has a food allergy it is to a meat protein such as beef, chicken,or one of the other common meat sources. Vegetarian diets may bring these food allergic dogs relieffrom their skin allergies. A smaller percentage of dogs are allergic to soy, which may limit choicesof commercially available vegetarian diets. In that case, if a caretaker wishes to feed a vegandiet, a homemade diet may be the next best option, but even more care must be taken to insureappropriate nutrient balance and supplements may need to be added to the diet.

In extreme allergy cases, a “novel” protein might be necessary. Novel proteins are ingredients that your dog or cat’s body is not familiar with. Chicken, beef, turkey, and lamb are meats used most often in pet food. Novel proteins for pets eating these ingredients would include venison, rabbit, duck, kangaroo or ostrich. Because the pet’s body has never been exposed to these ingredients, they are unlikely to solicit a negative response from the body. It is important to also use a novel carbohydrate when trying to fully eliminate allergic reactions. If a cat was eating a chicken and rice based food, a novel food for them might be duck and potato. For dogs who are allergic to meat proteins, there are options and ways of ensuring that they receive necessary nutrition for survival.
